  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Research
  • Knowledge transfer
  • Leadership development

Critical success factors of the education model for the School of Medicine and Health Sciences

  • Development of innovative curricula
  • Cutting edge educational strategies for the training of professors
  • Hospital – School property of the University
  • Strict learning control about clinical sciences in Private and Public Hospitals.
  • Large Faculty

Research

Through research, the School of Health Sciences and Medicine, achieves strengthening the strategic aspects of our mission, attracting student and professor talent, creating a publishing culture, attracting additional external fund, interconnecting with researchers, strengthening medical programs, promoting internationalization, consolidating the institution’s prestige and contributing to the sustainable development of our country.

Five research programs:

  • Cellular therapy and regenerative medicine
  • Cancer and hematology
  • Biomedical devices
  • Cardiology and vascular medicine
  • Ophthalmology and visual sciences

Cellular therapy and regenerative medicine:

This program develops technology addressing live isolation, expansion and differentiation of non-differentiated totipotencial cells, in specialized and physiologically active cells with the purpose of regenerating equivalent tissue capable of recovering lost organ functions.

 Research Fields:

Differentiation of stem cells to myocardiocites and motor neurons

  • Application of differentiated stem cells in animal models.
  • Application of autologous stem cells to neurodegenerative illness patients.

Within the projects, we find treatment for patients who have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, spinal cord injury and diabetes, Parkinson and Alzheimer.

Hematology and cancer:

The program strives for contribute for the discovery and invention of new agents and new technologies in order to prevent, treat and increase the patient’s quality of life.

Research fields:

Cancer immunology

  • Therapeutic, predictive and diagnostic research of cancer in general.
  • Epidemiology of hematological and oncological diseases.

Biomedical devises:

The biodesign and production of biomedical devices. The biofluids pump ability to mimic the performance of a human heart, is quite extraordinary. This involves two other developments and outlines the development area of the work team. Research and integration activities unfold through different concentration areas, such as: biomedical manufacturing (bio–design, biomaterials and manufacturing); biomechanics and mechanics of biofluids.

Cardiology and vascular medicine

Characterization of the cell and molecular mechanisms which contribute to heart failure.  The definition of the mechanisms shall render the opportunity of assessing new experimental prevention therapies and treatment in model animals in order to obtain scientific basis for the performance of clinical studies with patients.

Some of the projects are:

  • Origin of the inflammatory state of heart failure.
  • Mitochondrial calcium transport participation in the development of heart failure and arrythmogenesis.
  • MRI spectroscopy and the bioenergy of myocardio.

Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Performs research and highly strict education, in the field of ophthalmology and vision, in order to impact our society’s wellbeing, through the development of innovative methods and devices that diagnose and treat ophthalmologic diseases and vision disturbances.

Research areas:

  • Molecular biology
  • Electrophysiology area (Cardiac physiology studies)
  • Cellular cultivation area
  • Microbiology area

Innovative curriculum

  • Ethics and Professionalism Program
  • 1978-2000 Basic Knowledge in Problems
  • 2000-2002 Professors Training Program in Maastricht and in the Netherlands
  • 2001-2010 Competence based Curriculum.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY HEALTH TEAM: 6 CAREERS

  • Physician and surgeon
  • Biomedical engineer
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Bachelor in Nutrition and Wellness
  • Health Business Management
  • Dentist

Community Service

Since the first quarter, the students participate in a process based on learning through community service which emphasizes prevention and health care activities. In these activities, professors supervise the students’ involvement in the community’s wellbeing and at the same time as they acquire experience and skills.

Outpatient services in communities are rendered in health care centers and in city and rural elementary schools. This program is coordinated with the Ministry of Health and Public Academic Institutions.

Work performed by the students as community service goes hand in hand with theFundación Santos y de la Garza Evia, which has outpatient health centers, such as the “Clínica de Atención Médica (Medical Treament Center)” and the “Centro de Geriatría y Alzheimer Salvador Sada Gómez” (Geriatrics and Alzheimer Center).

Medical Specialties

The Graduate Program at the School of Medicine features 18 programs. Interaction with the Hospital San José provides medical teaching and experience for med students which together with some Ministry of Health public hospitals, over 2 million people are treated annually.

This incorporation shaped the first academic model of its type between public and private institutions towards the training of specialists in Multi-centric Programs and thus fulfills the commitment of better serving our community.
